Most of us learned to shower as kids and never thought about it again. Soap, water, a quick rub, done.

But if you've ever felt that your skin still isn't quite clean, or that your back is a place you just splash and hope, you're not imagining it. Here's what's going on.

Reason 1

You've been rinsing, not cleaning.

Soap lifts oil, and water rinses it away. Dead skin is different: it doesn't rinse off. It has to be lifted.

Without something to lift it, that dull, rough layer just stays where it is, shower after shower.

Fresh out of the shower and already doing the sniff test? That's what rinsing without lifting feels like.

Reason 2

Your loofah is mostly moving soap around.

A loofah is great at making bubbles. It's not great at lifting anything. And because it stays damp between showers, it's not the freshest thing to rub on clean skin either.

A washcloth has the opposite problem: soft and pleasant, but too gentle to grip much at all.

You haven't really washed your back in years.

Any tip for the first shower?

Use liquid body wash rather than bar soap. It lathers much better on the towel. Start gently on the softer side.

Rinse it, hang it up and it dries in about 15 minutes. You can also put it in the washing machine.

How long does it last?
